Brotherhood

The Temple Brotherhood is a major Temple affiliate with a tradition of service to our Congregation and the community. Brotherhood continually strives to bean important resource to serve the charitable and educational interests the Temple and to create opportunities to explore men's issues and men's spirituality.  Brotherhood's mission is to provide service, fellowship and fun programs and educational opportunities to members and to the congregation.

Brotherhood leadership is made up of an Executive Committee. The Brotherhood Executive Committee is an administrative and leadership body overseeing Brotherhood finances and is responsible for initiating special charitable, educational, social and mitzvah activities.

Officers comprising the Executive Committee consist of President, 1st and 2nd Vice Presidents, Secretary, and Treasurer.  The Brotherhood President serves as a member of the Temple Executive Committee and the Temple Board.

The 2nd Night Seder, a congregational and community Passover celebration, is the primary fund-raising event to support Brotherhood's Israel Scholarship Fund.  This is a scholarship assistance initiative for upper-grade religious school students planning a summer tour of Israel through the North American Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY) travel program.

The Andy Yerman Mitzvah Award is bestowed yearly in special recognition of a congregant who has given exceptional service and charitable dedication toward helping others through involvement in service to the Temple and community service activities for the needy.

Brotherhood sponsored events and activities in the past include:

Dedicated Brotherhood Shabbat Services in June on the Friday prior to Father's Day.
Quarterly Sunday "Breakfast with Brotherhood" programs open to all, featuring an influential guest speaker from Congregation Shaarai Shomayim or the Lancaster community.
An annual membership banquet for all paid members.
Trips to athletic and cultural events, card parties and social events.
Sponsoring a luncheon and other complimentary events for the Temple's Scholar in Residence weekend.
A special Oneg after the annual Sisterhood Shabbat Service.
Maintenance, upkeep and beautification of the Temple cemetery.
A membership mitzvah to always be available on short notice to volunteer time and energy to help a congregant in need.

We extend an invitation to all men who are a part of Congregation Shaarai Shomayim to join our Temple Brotherhood and participate in our mission of fellowship, service to the Temple and the community and fun.  Our special focus is on bringing new members into the organization to carry on our tradition of mitzvah and service, and also to engage all Brotherhood members in actively carrying forward the goals of Brotherhood through teamwork.

Join us and share in our commitment to make the world a better place.
